While talking with my friend earlier this week, I came to the conclusion that the best way to keep a handle on my out of control google reader would be to post a weekly roundup, so here you go. Marbled red velvet cheesecake brownies

I'm attending a pot luck Super Bowl party tomorrow night and have been mulling over what to bring. A friend sent out a sign up list for everything from potato salad to cookies. So I signed up for cookies and brownies. That's when I remembered seeing these on pinterest. Since I'm going to be out of town tomorrow until right before the game I decided I should go ahead and make them today. These are pretty beginner level to make, but they are a little time consuming so make sure you don't have to run out the door any time soon. Let the games begin!

Ingredients (brownie batter):
3 1/4 cups flour
2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3 large eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon red food coloring (I had to use gel food coloring since apparently they don't sell liquid food coloring at my grocery store anymore. So I just eyeballed it)
2 teaspoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons milk

Ingredients

(Cheesecake layer):
2 8oz packages cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13 x 18 (I used an 11x17 so use what ya got, it still works) jelly roll pan with butter or nonstick cooking spray. Make sure to use a fairly thick pan, a thin pan will result in a burnt bottom layer (and that's no fun :( )

In a large bowl whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Set aside. In a medium bowl whisk together eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, red food coloring, and white vinegar

Dry

Wet

Stir the dry and wet ingredients, until completely combined. The batter will be a really thick, almost moldable texture.. Remove 3/4 cup of the batter and place it in a medium bowl. Stir in the 2 tablespoons of milk (into the 3/4 cup of batter you just took out). Set aside the 3/4 cup batter. (I didn't use the whole 3/4 cup so maybe go with 1/2 cup instead)

Pour the remaining batter into the prepared jelly roll pan. Using a spatula, smooth out the batter to reach all the edges.


Getting this to spread evenly took a little while

In your stand mixer beat cream cheese and sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs and vanilla, beating until combined and there are no lumps. Pour the cream cheese mixture on top of the red velvet layer and smooth mixture till it reaches all the edges.


Swirly!

Drop spoonfuls of the remaining red velvet batter (that you mixed with milk) onto the top of the cheesecake layer. Drag the tip of a knife through the red velvet and the cheesecake layers to create swirls.

Bake for 30 minutes, rotating half way through, or just until the center is set and it no longer jiggles. Let cool completely on a wire rack before cutting. Use a medium sized heart cookie cutter to create an adorable Valentine's treat. (I'd check these at 20 or 25 minutes, I think mine cooked a little too long)


Bon Appetite!

The verdict is still out on my try at these. I'm waiting for them to cool so I can cut them all out and then eat the scraps (yum!), but I'm afraid they baked for just a bit too long. Oh well, you live and learn right?

I'm fixing my hair today. As a matter of fact that's exactly what I'm about to go do. I've been letting it air dry because I've been too lazy to go get the hair dryer and actually get started on the fixing process. It probably only takes me about 30 minutes start to finish, and I'm usually sitting in front of the TV doing it but it's such an arduous task. I can't even remember the last time I straightened my hair. I know I wore it curly last week. Even though it takes about the same amount of time it takes far less effort. I love my hair and I love wearing it straight I just hate taking the effort to make it that way. But today I'm making the effort, which if you knew my schedule today would not make much sense (especially this late in the day). Today I'm going to the gym (in a few hours) and then heading to a group bible study and dinner. I always bring clothes to change into on Thursday nights because I'm not showing up looking to' up, but I also never bring my straightener so my hair is a little worse for wear (and sweaty). I'm bringing my straightener tonight...although I have the sneaking suspicion that my hair is going to end up in a pony tail. Whether that happens before, during, or after working out I'm not sure, but it's probably inevitable. Anyway, this is a post about vanity. I'll post a pic later. As soon as I have the money these lovely locks are saying adios. I miss my short hair :( /end random post about vanity

My hair stayed down all night! I put it up in a clip while working out and then re straightened it when I was done and it looked essentially the same. Maybe I'll do this more often (since some people don't want me to cut it). It's still easier to go curly though

Epic Art Adventures

I'm super stoked right now! A late evening "snark" session with some friends turned into an epic art adventure. We're still hashing out the details, but essentially we'll be sending each other mystery boxes full of art supplies and any other fun bits of nonsense that we find and then we'll be responsible for making art out of it. THEN the icing on the cake - we'll be blogging about it! We're still in the beginning stages because we literally just came up with this idea, but you can find us here. Stay tuned as we fine tune our rules and get this thing started. I can almost guarantee that you'll have just as much fun with this as we do. And heck, maybe you'll be inspired to start your own collaborative art project :)

Sometimes you just have to let things go

I've decided to let my domain (www.studiokako.com) expire. I've had it for quite a few years now and while it's not expensive to keep renewing it every year a) I don't have a job right now, therefore I don't have the money to renew it and b) I STILL haven't done anything with it. The only reason I kept renewing it was because I kept intending to do something with it, but I honestly don't think I ever will. There are far too many sites that host things, like blogs and ways to hock your wares. So why waste my time and effort painstakingly designing a webpage that will just be another thing for me not to keep up with? Case and point - my blog and my etsy. Poor little etsy shop. It's so sad and neglected. I really need to do something about that. I guess I could take a cue from a friend and maybe overhaul it in the spring. That's the time of rebirth right?

Lessee, lessee lessee (props to you if you recognize where that's from :) ). There was a purpose to updating tonight... oh yes! I had a mini photoshoot with my cousin last night, inspired by my sister (who to my knowledge doesn't have a blog...). So without further ado here are some of my favorite shots from last night.

Well, I seem to still be having problems formatting my posts after I add pictures. I might have to move this little bloggy blog elsewhere... we shall see. For now, enjoy the pics!

Wow, I can't believe it's been six months since I blogged. I guess I've been a little distracted. Let me fill you in on what's been going on lately...

Jewelry: Pretty much nothing on this front. I've taken a hiatus of sorts. I do that from time to time. I have so many hobbies and interests that they can't all share the limelight at the same time, so sometimes some of them get put on the back burner. The past few months that's where jewelry has been. I'm lacking inspiration, but hopefully that will change soon. Funds are tight, so I've got to work with what I've got, but that's surprisingly a lot so I should be churning out some fun and fabulous new things soon. (I've actually got a jewelry "play date" scheduled for Tuesday. Maybe new items will surface!)

Painting/Art: Painting has sort of come out of hibernation... it has spent quite a bit of time there this past year. In October I painted a picture for a dear friend's birthday and that reignited the passion. However it fizzled out shortly after that. I have one other painting that is almost complete and one on the horizon that may or may not get done. These were both supposed to be Christmas presents... oops. Don't get me wrong, painting is still a passion of mine, but like jewelry it's taking a back seat right now.

Photography: Here's where the action is! Now granted, I haven't been photographing maniacally for the past 6 months, but I have been doing quite a bit, for work and play. To name a few, I did my cousin's senior pics, some fun zoo photography and a quirky little fashion shoot (samples below) with a friend. Great things are in the works as far as the photography is concerned. I've been asked to do 3 weddings (!) (only one of which that is planned and has a date set), family photos, baby portraits, more senior pics and even some sporting events. I'm looking forward to each of these because they all have their own challenges and excitement. Now I'm by no means a professional photographer, I just enjoy photography and strive to learn as much as I can and improve my skills whenever possible. If I happen to get paid for doing something I love, all the better.

Personal/Job: Here's where things are sticky. I've been going through quite the rough patch this past year, including quitting my job and being unsuccessful in finding a new one. I'm slowly clawing my way back to sanity, but it is an arduous task. Fortunately I have my hobbies to help. I have my good days, and I have my bad days, just like anybody else. Unfortunately the bad days have been running rampant. Good friends, art (in any of it's many incarnations), and family are helping me through it and I hope that someday soon I'll be able to pull myself completely out of this miry pit. Anyway, on to happy things, like photographs of my recent adventures!

I've been a bit down and out and distracted lately and my Etsy shop has suffered (in my opinion) as a result. I've got several pieces that need to be posted, but I just can't muster the desire or energy to get it done. I've also got a few more pieces that need to be photographed, ordinarily one of my favorite things to do, but again, no desire or energy. I'm going to make a doctor's appointment soon. Amongst other things I think I might have an iron deficiency... let's hope so, otherwise it's back to the drawing board and more trial and error. I did recently complete a few custom orders - 31 bracelets for a group of girls at pre-teen camp, and a chainmaille piece for a family member; however, I've also got 3 more custom orders to complete. 2 bracelets for one cousin (still waiting on measurements to complete these), 1 bracelet for another cousin, and 2 bracelets for yet another cousin (these bracelets should have been finished months ago but they're not at the top of my priority list unfortunately). So as you can see, there's lots to do but no one to do it. Well, of course I'm the one that needs to do it, but I just can't seem to make myself. Hopefully I'm out of this funk soon, it is severely affecting my productivity.

A reunion of sorts

Well, my family reunion is coming up, this Saturday as a matter of fact, so I'll be MIA for the day. That won't affect anything around here of course, since my updates are few and far between, but I've stocked up my shop with lots of pretties for you to peruse while I'm gone and might be adding a few more over the next day or two before I leave. As far as the reunion goes, I'll be taking a few things with me to sell in our "Family Reunion Auction" and whatever doesn't sell will soon be up for grabs on my Etsy as well. We use the money to help maintain and upkeep our family cemetery. As always, check out my little Etsy box over on the right hand side of your screen, yeah over there, and down just a little bit. Surprise! You're going to Vegas!

Well, I'm off to Las Vegas in about 2 weeks. Impromptu vacation and friend visiting. I'm stoked, especially since I have my D5000, it should get a lot of mileage that week. I also decided to take along my Holga, since it hasn't (ever) seen any action. I only have one roll of 120 film but I decided Vegas is as good a place as any to experiment (and then buy more film of course), but alas, when I went in search of this lone ranger I came up empty handed. The box my camera came in was no where to be found! And neither was the film! I've ransacked every room in my house, I've looked in closets, under beds, in other boxes, even in the kitchen. It is gone. I've given up hope on finding the box, I'm pretty sure (even though I save all my boxes) that I tossed that one, for some strange and mysterious reason.

I have not however, lost hope for that lone roll of film. Maybe I salvaged it and tossed it into one of my many camera bags? Maybe ??? I hope :*( I know it's not the end of the world, I can go down to my camera shop, or peruse ebay for more film (which is what I'm about to do) but darnit, I'm determined to find that film. I shall keep you (whoever you are, if anyone at all) updated on my search for film... or I'll at least, eventually, when I blog again, let you know if I found it or not.

I really am terrible at this blogging thing lately. A brief update: I've completed several more pieces of chainmaille and a few non-chainmaille pieces. Nothing on the website yet though :( See, I'm lacking this handy little thing called a camera. Oh sure, I have a point and shoot that's a few years old, but it doesn't do what I need it to do. But soon, very soon I shall have one. I'm scraping my pennies together for a Nikon D5000.

Anyway, I've also done a few more paintings lately and a little bit of facepainting (for profit finally!). I am now re-opening my doors to this avenue of my creativity. The past few years I haven't had the time to commit to it, but seeing as how my job situation is lacking lately I have the time to devote to my arts. Now, I just need some business cards and a few faires and festivals to get my name out there. Oh yeah, and if you're having a birthday party or event in the Houston area, hit me up. We'll work something out :) I'm willing to travel a little bit (within a few hours of Houston), but there will be a travel charge in addition to my regular rates.

Well, I've been a busy little artist these past few days. I've finished 3 bracelets and an anklet. I'm in the middle of a ring and a (non chainmaille) necklace. I also acquired some wire so I can work on some woven bracelets (and maybe necklaces). I'm excited!

Hiatus

Since it has been months since I last let you into my world, I decided today would be a good day to do that. I've been on a hiatus of sorts from art, but the past month or so I've been returning to my love. In between looking for a "real" job and doing my "pseudo" job (hey, its a little bit of money every week, so I'm not complaining) I've been creating.I've also been contemplating and preparing for an opportunity to do some facepainting, haven't done that in a while.

I think, as soon as I have enough stock, that my etsy shop (Studiokako) is going to be revamped. In addition to my paintings (and painted bags) I'm going to be selling jewlery. :) Mainly chainmaille and "costume" jewelry. Nothing of the precious metals and gemstone variety. So, here are a few pictures of some of my WIP (works in progress) and some teasers of what's to come in the near future to my revamped Etsy. (Is it sad that I'm already revamping it and it's only been open a few months?)

I know it's been a thousand years since I last updated this thing, but there hasn't been much to talk about. Lots has happened in the past few months however: I've temporarily left the world of corporate jobs, my studio has been restored to its former glory (roof, carpet & all!), and I've been a busy little bee getting my Etsy shop up and running. It's sparse at the moment, but the ideas and inspiration are flowing, so hopefully it will fill up soon. I've got a few paintings up that were originally intended for the RSAL, however they never made it out into the world, so I figured I'd give them a shot at being sold first. Anyway, check out my etsy shop, leave me some love, and stay tuned, because soon it will be brimming with fabulous original pieces of art that you just won't be able to live without.

Hi guys!

If anyone out in the vast world wide web is actually reading this. Sorry for the lack of productivity in the past several months. I've got two "real small art" paintings to "release" but haven't thought of decent locations to leave them, so they remain in my possession.

Also, I haven't painted anything since early september due to Hurricane Ike. He put a hole through the roof in my studio, so it has been out of commission. The hole is fixed, but the studio is currently still out of use because the carpet still needs to be reinstalled, so everything has to stay boxed up and easily moveable for when the handyman comes back.

So since I have to focus my creative energy somewhere I finally signed up for that photography class that I've been trying to take for 5 some odd years. I love it. I love 35mm, and my SLR and will probably upgrade to a digital SLR in the not too distant future, but I'm also discovering medium format cameras. I love the effects so I think I'm going to start exploring that avenue in my spare time (between work and my current photography class, and my oh so busy social life ;) ) .

Anyway, that's just a brief: Hey where the heck have you been? response .... now I need breakfast.

Remember this painting?

Yeah, I know it's just in the post below, but I've got news about it! If you'll recall, it was sent with my roommate's boyfriend to good ole' Cameron, TX. Well having not heard anything about it and being quite the impatient person I am, I asked my roommate to ask her boyfriend what happened to it. This is what happened:

When he (the boyfriend) was driving back to Cameron he stopped at his local McDonald's to get some dinner. When he pulled up to get his food the girl giving it to him noticed the painting (sitting in the front seat of his car). So she inquired about it. Being the friendly person he is he handed it to her so she could get a closer look, she liked it a lot. When she tried to hand it back to him he told her "No, you can keep it. As long as you promise to go to the website on the back and follow the instructions", she replied "Are you f-ing kidding me?!". Apparently she was very excited about being able to keep the painting. Obviously she hasn't made it to the website yet, but that's ok. At least I know what happened to this one. I'll spread my art any way I can, and maybe, one of these days, someone will actually drop by to let me know they have it. :]

p.s. Life has been coming at me awfully fast lately and I haven't had a spare moment to paint, not even RSA!! :( Hopefully more paintings coming soon. I still have two I need to "post" some place.

My second painting :

The lamp behind it is one my roommate's dad made for her. It's made of driftwood. Although it was unintentional (or perhaps, subconscious?) the painting reminds me of the lamp.

Here's a closeup, I've been calling it my tree painting, but maybe I should call it driftwood?

This painting was sent with my roommate's boyfriend. To a town about 2 hours NW of me. Hopefully it will have a better response than the cupcake did. I think he'll do a little better planning as well :-) . Still no word on the cupcake by the way.
I've finished another painting, and am halfway done with another, and intend to start (and hopefully finish) one more tonight. I'm unsure but it may be my last Real Small Art for at least two weeks... but I might have one more canvas. After that last canvas however, the paintings will cease for at least a week or two so that I can acquire some funds to purchase more canvases (or stretcher bars if I can find em' small enough).
I have a quite decent paying job, I just have a lot of debt and high bills to pay at the moment, tonight starts the beginning of earnestly working towards fixing that. The credit cards are going in the safe that is buried under countless things, so it's very difficult to get to, and the frivolous spending ends. Well, this is much more long winded than I had intended.
To sum up: hopefully 3 paintings coming your way soon, and as soon as the finances allow I shall buy some more canvases and some moo tags and continue this project. Until then I think I'll staple sketch pad paper to the backs of the canvases as my little "calling card". And don't worry, I'll keep painting, it just won't be RSA for a while.

It's a little bigger (6x6) than the rest of my pieces are going to be (4x4), but I really wanted it to be square and the only square canvases available at my hobby lobby were the 6x6. Ah the sacrifices an artist must make :-) .

Here it is at its temporary new location! (my local post office)

I've just registered w/ the Real Small Art League.

I can't wait to get started on my first work of Real Small Art.
